What do you stand for? What values rule your thoughts and actions? These questions are challenging and require intense self-examination. Last spring, seniors in the Speech Communcations classes at the High School found answers to these questions and shared them through the use of technology. Students of Mrs. Marilyn Montesano (pictured below working with some of her students) and Mrs. Suzanne Brown participated in This I Believe, an international project engaging people in writing, sharing and discussing the core values and beliefs that guide their lives. To get involved in this project, students were first asked to write and submit to their teacher as well as the This I Believe project their own statement of personal belief, their credo. After submitting their essays, students then used GarageBand to record their belief statements as simple podcasts which mirror the 1950s original National Public Radio series this project is based on. The finished recordings were then shared in class for peer review and reflection. By integrating technology with their writing and speaking skills, students who participated in the project not only made a great use of technology to enhance their learning experience in the classroom but made technology a natural and powerful part of the curriculum. With so much success with this project, Montensano and Brown hope to do further audio recording with their students in the future. Good luck to them and we can't wait to tune in then!

One of the nicest features built into Mac OS X is its abilities to alert you of all updates for the Apple software installed on your Mac. This feature happens automatically when you launch an Apple application that has a newer version available than the one you have on your computer or by going to the Apple menu and manually launching the Software Update application.

However, in school, you don't have the ability to install updates so this message to update can be a bit of a bother to see each time you open an application that is not the most current version Apple offers. A common example is a newer version of iTunes than what is installed on the school's computers.

The easiest way to workaround this behavior in Mac OS X is to ignore an update. To ignore an update when you see a message about updating, start by manually opening the Software Update application of Mac OS X by clicking on the Apple icon and choosing the Software Update… command. Next, select the update from in the list in the Software Update window and choose Ignore Update... from the Update menu. Alternatively, you just select the update from the list and press the Delete key. From now on, Software Update will stop asking you to update to the new software!
