Recently, students in Mrs. Donna Couture and Ms. Valerie Caruso’s 9th grade English Honors classes were engaged in a fun-filled alternative activity for their final assessment on Harper Lee’s famous novel, To Kill A Mockingbird. Rather than the traditional book report or a similar assignment, the classes was divided into groups and challenged instead to produce short films focusing on the novel. Students were asked to provide an insightful analysis of theme, character and plot in a creative, entertaining manner. As they began this task, each group was required to write a script and storyboard for their film. Before students began working, they were given some direct instruction in the use, special effects, and tricks of iMovie by Mr. Amante so they could see what was possible while planning their film. Armed with this knowledge and after complete these planning steps, each group then received a Flip Video camera to record their video. Students then took the cameras home for a few days for filming and included props, costumes, and even offsite locations in the community to make their films as professional and interesting as possible. After filming was complete, they then spent a few days in the computer lab editing their movies into a finished product. The end results were exceptional projects (as can be seen in this example student movie) and showed how students not only successfully met the task at hand but had a great deal of fun at the same time. Among the various films created by the groups were movie trailers advertising the novel, talk shows interviewing the novel's main characters, reenactments of scenes from within the novel, and even news broadcasts reporting about events in the novel. Overall, this video project was very successful. Students not only solidified their knowledge of the novel through use of storyboards, scripts and overall dialogue but the use of technology engaged each student and provided motivation, thus leading to projects that were original, vivid and demonstrated a high level of creativity. Using Flip Cameras and iMovie as part of your curriculum is possible in almost any content area. If you would like to do this too, please contact the Tech Team. They would be happy to work with you on using moviemaking as part of your classroom instruction as well. |

While Spotlight is an indispensable tool on the Mac, there may be times when trying to find files that you may not have much success. One of the most useful ways to improve this situation is to have Spotlight limit results to certain types of files using the "kind:" search modifier, a longtime but often overlooked feature of Mac OS X. By adding this simple keyword to your search query, you tell Spotlight what kind of file you are looking for, greatly improving your chances of finding it quickly.

For example, if you trying to find a particular Word document, you can just type "kind:word" followed by the title of your document and Spotlight will load only Word documents it finds, making it easier to comb the list of results. Most likely Spotlight will retrieve the file instantly with the top few search results. There are lots of "kind" keywords that you can use in Spotlight to greatly hone the results of your searches. Many of these can be found online here in this tried and true Apple support document which is a great reference to many of them. Try them out the next time you are using Spotlight and hopefully you see how "kind" can make it easier to look for files with Spotlight.
